I Used to Think It Was Just “Genetics”
For years, I assumed my under-eye darkness was permanent.
Indian skin tone (Fitzpatrick IV–V) naturally carries more melanin. That means when pigmentation appears under the eyes, it shows stronger than on lighter skin. Combine that with long screen hours, inconsistent sleep, and LA sun exposure — and it becomes obvious fast.
But here’s what I learned:
Not all dark circles are the same.
And that changes everything.
The 4 Real Causes of Dark Circles in Men
1. Pigmented Dark Circles (Very Common in Indian Men)
This is actual melanin buildup under the eyes.
Common triggers:
- Sun exposure
- Eye rubbing
- Chronic inflammation
- Post-acne pigmentation spreading downward
If your under-eye looks brown, not blue or purple, this is likely pigmentation.
Fix Strategy:
- Daily SPF (non-negotiable)
- Vitamin C serum
- Niacinamide
- Gentle retinol (low strength)
2. Vascular Dark Circles
These look bluish or purplish.
Cause:
- Thin skin under the eye
- Visible blood vessels
- Poor sleep
- Stress
If your darkness gets worse after late nights, this is partly vascular.
Fix Strategy:
- Improve sleep consistency
- Reduce sodium at night
- Caffeine-based eye creams (temporary tightening)
- Cold compress
3. Structural / Tear Trough Shadow
This isn’t pigment.
It’s anatomy.
If you have a deeper under-eye hollow, light creates a shadow that looks like darkness. No cream fixes bone structure.
Only:
- Filler
- Or strategic lighting + grooming (real talk)
4. Lifestyle Fatigue
This one is obvious but underestimated.
- Screen exposure
- Chronic stress
- Dehydration
- Poor gut health
- Iron deficiency (in some cases)
When I cleaned up sleep timing and hydration, I noticed about a 15–20% visible improvement. Not dramatic. But noticeable.
What Actually Worked For Me
Here’s what moved the needle:
1. Consistent Sunscreen
Most men skip the under-eye area. Big mistake.
Mineral SPF around orbital bone daily.
2. 5% Niacinamide
Helped even tone over 8–10 weeks.
3. Low-Dose Retinol (2–3x weekly)
Thickened skin slightly over months.
4. Sleep Discipline
Not just “more sleep.”
Consistent sleep timing.
My Apple Watch data actually helped here — closing rings means nothing if you sleep at 2am.
What Did NOT Work
- Random eye creams without actives
- Home remedies (potato slices, tea bags)
- Over-layering products
- Rubbing aggressively
If anything, aggressive rubbing makes pigmentation worse in darker skin tones.
So… Genetics or Lifestyle?
Answer: Both.
Genetics decides your baseline.
Lifestyle decides how bad it gets.
If you’re Indian, you are more prone to visible pigmentation. But that doesn’t mean it’s untouchable.
You can realistically improve:
- 20–40% with skincare + lifestyle
- More with dermatological procedures
But zero effort = zero change.
Quick Routine for Indian Men (Simple Version)
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Vitamin C (optional)
- Niacinamide
- Sunscreen (under eyes included)

Night
- Cleanser
- Retinol (2–3x/week)
- Light moisturizer
That’s it. Don’t complicate it.
My Thought
Dark circles don’t make you unattractive.
But unmanaged fatigue + poor grooming does.
There’s a difference.
